Temecula’s History and Local Culture
The story of Temecula begins thousands of years ago with the indigenous people who called this beautiful land home. With a history that is both deep and rich, Temecula’s tale is an exciting journey from its ancient beginnings to its status as a thriving city in the present day.
Ancient Times
Long before the city of Temecula came into existence, this region was inhabited by the Temecula Indians. The name ‘Temecula’ is an anglicized version of ‘Temeku’, which is understood to mean ‘place of the sun’ in the Luiseño language. These tribes were hunter-gatherers who lived off the land’s abundance, and their artifacts can still be found in the area today.
Spanish Period (1797 – 1821)
The Spanish period started when the Mission of San Luis Rey, responsible for the Spanish Missionaries in the region, established the Mission San Antonio de Pala in 1816. The Temecula Valley was part of the mission lands, and the Native Americans living there were converted to Christianity.
Mexican Period (1821 – 1848)
Right after Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821, the Mexican government began granting ranchos to citizens and soldiers, a process that marked the beginning of the Mexican era in California. The Temecula Valley became part of Rancho Temecula, granted to Félix Valdez in 1845.
American Period (1848 – Present)
All the way in 1848 with the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo that led to California becoming part of the USA. Temecula became a key stop on the stagecoach lines that were spreading into California from the end of the Santa Fe trail.
In the late 19th century, Temecula became a place of importance as a shipping point for cattle and grain. In 1882, the California Southern Railroad, a subsidiary of the transcontinental Santa Fe Railroad, came to Temecula, fostering more growth.
In the late 20th century, modernization began to take hold in Temecula with the 1984 establishment of the Rancho California Master Plan. In 1989, Temecula was incorporated as a city. From its roots as an agricultural community, Temecula has grown into a thriving city, famous for its wineries, festivals, and natural beauty.
Today, Temecula boasts a population of over 100,000 residents and is known for its quality of life, excellent schools, and economic prosperity. It serves as a popular tourist destination, particularly for its historical Old Town, beautiful wine country, and Pechanga Resort and Casino.
