Mar Vista is a neighborhood in the Westside region of Los Angeles, California. Venice Boulevard bounds it to the east, National Boulevard to the south, Sawtelle Boulevard to the west, and the Santa Monica Freeway to the north. The area was originally part of Rancho La Ballona, a Mexican land grant given in 1839 by Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado to Ygnacio and Augustin Machado. The Machados sold their portion of the rancho in 1871, and it was subdivided into small farms and residential lots. In 1902, developer Frederick Hastings Rindge purchased a large portion of the land and named it Mar Vista. Mar Vista was annexed by Los Angeles in 1925 and developed as a residential area during the 1920s and 1930s. The area experienced significant growth after World War II with an influx of new residents from other parts of Los Angeles. Today, Mar Vista is home to a diverse population with many different ethnicities represented. It is also home to several parks, schools, churches, businesses, and other amenities.
Mar Vista is not as expensive as its neighbor, Marina Del Rey, but it’s also not as cramped as most Los Angeles suburbs. You’ll find that traveling in this city can still be as easy as a walk in the park. It’s still easy to eat at some popular restaurants, and what’s more surprising is that you’ll find that almost everything else is cheap.
If you’re one of those people who want to live quietly and still don’t miss the opportunity to have fun, you’ll find that Mar Vista is the perfect place for you. It’s less luxurious than many of the surrounding towns, so you can take a walk through the parks or cycle around the area. It’s not as touristy, so that’s a plus. And, if you want to have fun, you can easily head to nearby Venice or Culver City to check out some of their art scenes or the occasional festival.
