Once you decide to move, dollar signs and expensive moving bills can start dancing in your head. To keep moving costs down, you may be tempted to use a mover with a low estimate along with a low rating.

However, if you are a well-informed customer (a customer who understands the risks involved in hiring cheap movers and what to look out for to avoid fraud) before signing off on a quote, you can get good service.

At LA Moving Star we take the guesswork out of final billing and we are a moving company that lives up to its professional reputation with the proper qualifications and insurance.

So here are 10 major risks whenever you would ever decide to choose a moving company simply because they offered you a lower rate and without doing your due diligence.

  1. Poor Quality of Service: Poor quality of service in moving can be attributed to a variety of factors. First and foremost, the quality of the moving company itself may be subpar. Poor customer service, a lack of experience, or inadequate training can all contribute to a poor experience for customers. Additionally, the quality of the supplies and equipment used in the move may be inadequate, resulting in damage to belongings or delays in completing the move. Finally, a lack of organization or planning on the part of the mover can lead to delays and other issues that can have an adverse effect on the quality of service. Cheaper movers often provide sub-par service, meaning you may have to settle for a move that takes longer and is more stressful than you expected.
  1. Risk of Damaged or Lost Belongings: Cheaper movers may not have the best equipment to make sure your items make it safely to your new home. The risk of damaged or lost belongings when moving is a legitimate concern. Regardless of whether you’re hiring professional movers or doing it yourself, your belongings can be at risk of being damaged or lost during the moving process. When hiring professional movers, you should be sure to ask about their experience and the quality of their equipment. Be sure to ask if they have insurance to cover any damaged or lost items. Take a pause and research the company by googling that moving company and reading its online reviews. Make sure you know what their policies are in the event of lost or damaged items. If you are moving, be sure to pack your items properly to minimize the risk of damage. Wrap fragile items in bubble wrap and pack them securely in boxes. Label all boxes and ensure that your know exactly the inventory of what is in each box. Make sure to use dollies and straps to keep items secure while you are loading and unloading the truck. No matter who is doing the moving, it is important to have your own insurance to cover any losses that may occur. Moving insurance is a great way to protect your belongings from any potential damage or loss during the process.
  1. Lack of Credibility: Cheaper movers may not have the best reputation or any reputation at all. This can make it difficult to find reviews or to even get quotes from them. Lack of credibility in moving refers to situations where an individual or company may have difficulty proving their trustworthiness in a situation where they are relocating. This could include things such as not having a clear background, not having enough references or a lack of experience in the area they are moving to. In some cases, it could be due to a lack of financial resources or other resources necessary to make a move a success. It is important to remember that credibility is key when it comes to moving and it is important to take steps to make sure that the move is made properly and safely.
  1. Poor Communication: Cheaper movers may not communicate with you as often or as clearly as more expensive movers. Poor communication in moving can lead to a number of issues. Poor communication between the movers and the customers can lead to confusion, delays, and additional costs. That leads to a lack of clarity about what is expected of each party and can lead to misunderstandings about important aspects of the move, such as the cost, timeline, and any special requests that the customer has. Poor communication can also lead to a lack of trust between the customer and the movers, which can make the entire process more stressful and unpleasant.
  1. Too Good to Be True Prices: Cheaper movers may offer prices that are too good to be true, meaning they could be cutting corners in order to stay profitable. It is possible to find moving services with rates that seem way too good to be true, but there are a few major things to consider before you decide to hire them. First, you need to ensure that the company is legit and has a good reputation for both Google reviews and Yelp reviews. Ask for references from past customers and read online reviews. You should also check to see if the company is licensed and insured. Additionally, ask about the type of equipment they use and the quality of their services. Finally, make sure to get a detailed estimate and ask about any additional fees or charges that may be added on later. By doing your research, you can help ensure that the moving company you hire is reputable and trustworthy.
  1. Unprofessionalism: Cheaper movers may be unprofessional in their attitude and behavior, meaning you’ll have to deal with them more than you’d like. Unprofessionalism in moving can be defined as any behavior that falls short of the standard expected of movers. This can include anything from failing to show up on time, not following through on promises, not providing necessary services, not taking proper care of customers’ belongings, not providing clear communication, or not providing adequate insurance or other protections for customers’ possessions. Unprofessionalism in moving can also include any behavior that is disrespectful, offensive, or unprofessional toward customers and their possessions. Moving companies should strive to create a positive, professional experience for their customers in order to ensure a successful move.
  1. Unclear or Hidden Fees: Cheaper movers may not provide clear details about potential fees or fees they’ll add on during the move. Unclear or hidden fees in moving can include extra charges for packing materials, weight, distance, and fuel. These charges may not be listed in the original estimate and can be difficult to identify. They may also include additional fees for special services like piano or antique moving or for packing and unpacking services. Other costs may include shuttle services, storage, and insurance, which may not be included in the original estimate. Finally, there may be additional charges for the time of the movers, which can vary based on the time of day, the size of the move, or the number of movers needed.
  1. Uninsured: Cheaper movers may not be insured or have insurance that doesn’t cover all of your belongings. Uninsured in moving means that the moving company does not offer insurance for the items being moved. This means that if any of the items are damaged, lost, or stolen during the move, the customer is responsible for the cost of replacing them. Customers should always check what type of insurance is offered by a moving company before agreeing to use their services to ensure their items are properly covered.
  1. Unreliable: Cheaper movers may not show up on time or at all, leaving you with a move that takes longer than it should. Unreliable in moving means that a person or group of people cannot be depended upon to move from one location to another in a timely manner. They may be late, fail to show up, or not follow through with plans that have been made. They may also be unreliable in terms of their ability to pack and transport items in a safe and timely fashion.
  1. Unsafe Practices include all of the followings:
  • Not using proper lifting techniques – This can lead to back and other injuries.
  • Not using appropriate safety equipment – This includes using the right size and type of dolly, straps, or other equipment to move heavy items safely.
  • Not having enough helpers – Trying to move heavy items without adequate help can lead to accidents and injuries.
  • Not wearing proper clothing – Loose clothing or jewelry can get caught on objects while moving.
  • Not planning the move – This includes not measuring doorways and hallways, which can lead to damage to the furniture and the interior of the home.
  • Not securing items – Not securing items properly can lead to items shifting and falling during the move.
  • Not taking breaks – Moving is a physically and mentally demanding task. Taking breaks is essential to prevent fatigue and injuries.

Whenever you start planning your move it should not come at the expense of your well-being. Sometimes it may sound too good to be true when a professional moving company offers low prices to avoid surprises and unexpected extra charges. Please be very careful with those kinds of companies and always ask a question!

Knowing what is at risk when making arrangements and what fees are included in the service will help you make the best decision for your move.

HOLY MOLY! Where do I even begin. First of all, in the last 6 years, I've moved probably 3-4 times. I've hired through task rabbit, asked for recs through friends, and have even hired those amazing parking lot patrons you see at every Home Depot. Long story short, it's always been a nightmare. Half of my things end up broken, my walls get scuffed, I end up needing to help lift things and spend hours afterwards cleaning up what the movers messed up. When planning my current move, I knew I had some really tricky pieces that were going to be an absolute beast to move to my new condo. I decided to dish out a couple extra bucks and work with an actual moving company this time after my best friend Lauren raved about LA Moving Star for months. When I tell you I'm astonished. First of all, the price was very reasonable and the movers that showed up were actual professionals. I would call them moving artists to say the least. They strategically have so many tricks up their sleeves in getting massive items through very cramped and small spaces. Everything was wrapped beautifully and not a single thing was damaged. Not only that but they were SO efficient. They were hustling, moving fast, and getting it all done in a timely manner. Usually when companies charge by the hour, I tend to notice workers taking their sweet time in certain areas... But this company values integrity and you can tell. They actually care about their customers and it's SO apparent. My specific movers were Alex, Max, and Serg and the 3 boys were spectacular. This move was definitely not an easy one and they even had to completely disassemble and rebuild my three massive closet pieces by hand.I cannot reccomend this company enough and will be reffering everybody I know to use them. Thank you thank you thank you!!!
